LIVE ONLINE WORKSHOP
FIRST PRINCIPLES
WITH GUEST MENTOR BERNARD KALU
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
Any great photographer will tell you that to be a photographer is hard work, but what does it really take to become one? What are the questions you should be asking yourself and what are the things you need to keep in mind when you’re out on the field?
For this workshop we have invited Nigerian photographer Bernard Kalu who’ll be answering these questions, addressing the ethics in photography and sharing his work, trajectory and personal experiences with us as a photographer living and working in Africa.
YOUR MENTOR

Guest mentor Bernard Kalu is a documentary photographer based in Lagos, Nigeria; his work is inspired by a passion to explore life and humanity.
Photography is drawing with light and he’s adopted it as a tool to not only tell stories but preserve today for the future. Bernard began working in photography in 2014, exploring street documentary and creative twists to wedding photography- with Auxano Photography. He is a certified canon master storyteller, VII Academy Foundry alumni, first runner up in the 2017 NATGEO Portfolio Review and has been on assignment with a number of organizations within and outside Nigeria: The Lancet, Bloomberg, IFAD, NBNL, MyAfricanPassport Inc. to mention a few.

Bernard seems really young, but his depth of understanding about photography and the creative process is very mature and wide-ranging. his talk and work were very inspirational.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Bernard, but I love his eye and the heart and energy in his work. I found the same in his workshop. He’s very talented and instinctive with his camera, and an inspiring, wise communicator. I felt honored that he trusted us with a first showing of a very personal project, (so powerful) , which showed clearly that he is not limited to street photography. I was impressed with his depth of personal awareness and his readiness to share, and so pleased Jorge and Christelle offered him a platform on RAW. Thank you, Bernard!
