Part of the beauty of street photography is that there are hundreds of ways of doing it (ok, maybe not hundreds, but many) and every photographer has their own unique way of approaching the streets.

For this workshop we have invited Gustavo Minas to share his way of working and give us insight on how he achieves his beautifully lit, reflection-filled images as well as talk about the projects he’s developed over the last decade, his references and how his work evolved over the years.

Gustavo Minas was born in Cássia (MG, Brazil) in 1981. He graduated in journalism from the State University of Londrina and studied language and history of photography with Carlos Moreira in São Paulo. Since 2009, he has been photographing the daily life of the cities where he lives.

He currently works as a journalist and freelance photographer in Brasilia. In 2017, his ‘Bus Station’ series won the POY LATAM award in the category “The Future of the Cities”. He’s a member of Burn my Eye collective, and his first book “Maximum Shadow, Minimal Light” was released in May 2019 by Edition Lammerhuber.

Master of colors and complex reflections, Gustavo presented his approach to street photography during this online Workshop. He transmitted us his passion for street photography through pragmatic and artistic advices precious for everyday practice. Very open-minded, he answered our questions with the pure desire to share his experience. A great moment of photographic sharing. I’m happy to have participated to this workshop. Thanks to Christelle and Jorge for organizing it. A very cool moment.

I have been in advertising for 30 years working with designers, commercial photographers and directors and have never experienced the openess of street photographers in general, and Gustavo in particular, in sharing their “secrets of success.” Many creative people guard what they feel makes them unique and marketable so it’s just amazing that Gustavo would take the time to tell you his process, camera settings, where he goes at what time of day and what he looks for to make a great picture. Thanks Raw Society for this access to great photographers. I will definitely sign up for another.

Really fun and engaging workshop. I’m so glad that The Raw Society made sure that the viewers were involved with the presentation and got their money’s worth. I was able to learn a lot and can’t wait to join more workshops in the future!
